At the beginning of the first term all Law Students are assigned a ‘Personal Tutor’, an academic member of staff who will be their personal tutor for the duration of their time in the School of Law. A list of students/personal tutors can be found on the Law School Notice Board shortly after the beginning of first term. The personal tutor scheme provides a contact for students who may experience difficulties in making the transition to third level given the relative freedom of a university and the challenges of studying an entirely new subject. The scheme enables you to have direct, informal access to someone who has met these questions before.
In addition to providing advice to students on the transition to third level, there may also be personal problems that you may wish to discuss in confidence. Even if s/he cannot solve such problems, your tutor can point you in the appropriate direction (for example, the student counsellor or the college doctor or other specialised student service). The normal pattern is for the personal tutors to meet their tutees early in the first term of the First Year. Appointments are scheduled for all first year students in this regard and students will be notified. These appointments are sent to each student’s personal UCC email address. Thereafter, the tutee should go directly to the tutor, if the need arises. Your personal tutor should be your first line of communication with the School and any problems should be brought directly to him or her, who can then refer the matter to the appropriate person if necessary (with your permission).
Once Personal Tutors have been assigned, a list of tutors and tutees is available at the Law School Office in the first floor foyer in Áras na Laoi. An initial meeting will have been scheduled for you; the time, date and place of which have been sent to your UCC student email account. Thereafter you should go directly to your tutor if the need arises.
