Title of Thesis: Migration in Contemporary Women’s Writing in Italy: Identity Narrative, Orality, Multilingualism and Multiculturalism

Short Description Project

This project investigates the literature of migration that has emerged in Italy in recent decades, in particular  by women from Italy’s African colonies. The analysis focuses on identity, narrative, orality, multilingualism and multiculturalism in their fictional production, with the aim of establishing its place in a renewed literary canon. Since the 1980s, Italy has become a destination for thousands of immigrants who leave the so-called Third World in search of better living conditions. Initially Italian intellectuals considered just the social aspects of this migration but they have since to examine migration as a cultural phenomenon. Consequently, greater critical attention has been paid to the cultural production of migrant writers in Italy and, most recently, scholars have begun examining texts produced by migrant women writers. My study is divided into four thematically-based chapters in which my selected women writers will be considered both individually and comparatively through feminist, narratological and postcolonial theories.
