PhD Social Sciences
The PhD (Social Science) is a four year (full time) taught structured postgraduate academic degree programme aimed at graduates of sociology, social policy, applied social studies, government, politics, anthropology and cognate disciplines who wish to pursue research in the general areas of globalisation, policy analysis, civil society, the state, active citizenship and culture. The aim of the programme is to produce highly skilled social researchers who can contribute to the development of society and the public sphere either as autonomous social research professionals, or as cutting edge academic social theorists, or as critically informed leaders in civil society, statutory or market organisations.
The programme is an inter-departmental initiative of the Departments of Applied Social Studies, Government and Sociology.
The PhD (Social Science) is a Graduate Research Education Programme (GREP) i.e a "4th Level Ireland" structured PhD programme, that provides a social research education environment in which to pursue doctoral studies, involving taught modules primarily in the first two years of the programme, whilst concurrently developing a doctoral dissertation which is then completed over the final two years of the programme.
The programme offers a training programme that equips graduates with theoretical, policy analysis and applied research skills to doctoral level commensurate with highest international standards. The programme provides generic social science research skills training in addition to specialist disciplinary training and research specialisation within a general research agenda that focuses on globalisation, the state, civil society and active citizenship. The programme also facilitates students to take generic skills modules within the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Science’s Graduate School.
