National Model UN, Hosted by UCC IRSoc

The NatMUN conference is modeled on the international standard Model United Nations format.  It sees delegations consisting of five students representing countries assigned to them in committees based on the United Nations' most important bodies -- e.g. the Security Council, the International Law Commission, and the UN Environmental Programme.  This ensures a diverse range of topics which will interest a wide selection of students.

The Conference has two primary objectives: To increase awareness of the United Nations and international affairs in general amongst Irish secondary students, and to give students an opportunity to develop their speaking and diplomatic skills in this unique arena.  We have the pleasure of announcing that scheduled to speak at this year's conference is Micheál Martin TD, Minister for Foreign Affairs.  Detailed briefing papers and delegate guides will be available online to participating schools before the conference.

The Model United Nations format is new to Ireland, but it is extremely easy to learn and is accessible to any student.  Topics and committees will be chosen to appeal to a diverse range of students.  It is an amazing opportunity for any student, even those not interested in public speaking generally, or even those not that interested in foreign affairs.

This conference can spark an interest you never knew you had, and the format is more relaxed and less intimidating than traditional debating, which makes it accessible to even the quietest student.  It's also a really good weekend, a great chance to make new friends and learn something about the world we live in.  I look forward to seeing you in January.
