Participants

100 children living in the Cork area will be recruited for the research study

The test group will be made up of 50 children who have been identified as having a language delay or disorder and the control group will be made up of 50 typically-developing children.

Language impaired children will be recruited through speech and language therapy services in Cork North and Cork South.  Typically developing children will be recruited from schools in the Cork area.  In order to be included in the study the children must meet the criteria outlined below.

 

Language Impaired Children

  • Aged between 5 years and 9 years 11 months
  • Have no known learning, hearing or significant physical difficulties
  • Have a receptive and/or expressive language impairment (>-1.25 SD on a standardised language test)
  • Have English as their first language and have parents who are native English speakers
  • Have lived in Cork for the past 3 years

 

Typically Developing Children

  • Aged between 5 years and 9 years 11 months
  • Have no known speech, language, hearing or any other learning difficulties
  • Have English as their first language and have parents who are native English speakers
  • Have lived in Cork for the past 3 years
