Applications are invited for a 3-year fixed-term post of lecturer in the School of Applied Social Studies. The School of Applied Social Studies is composed of 35 academic staff, 4 research staff and 7 administrative staff. It offers a large number of courses in the applied social sciences at undergraduate level (BSocSc, BSW, BSocSc (Youth and Community Work), and at masters level (MSW, MSocSc (Social Policy) MSocSc (Third Sector Management). In recent years the school has been developing its fourth level repertoire including: an interdisciplinary PhD (Social Science) offered in collaboration with the Institute of Social Sciences for the 21st Century (ISS21), a ‘Practitioner Doctorate‘ DSocSc programme and a proposed PhD (Social Work) – which is at the core of the schools CPD strategy. CPD is a significant growth area within the School of Applied Social Studies, which offers 3 professional programmes.
Research has become increasingly important in the School’s development strategy. In recent years staff have attracted a series of grants from Irish and European research funding bodies. A €919,000 grant from PRTLI4 has been utilised to develop an interdisciplinary social science research project – the Institute of Social Sciences for the 21st Century (ISS21). It is a core objective of the School of Applied Social Studies to raise its research profile to a highly competitive international standard. Increasing external funding, cooperating with other disciplines at UCC and with national and international partners is essential to our research strategy. ISS21 has provided the research infrastructure to achieve this goal in the School.
2. Job Responsibilities
The duties of the lecturer shall be to lecture and examine in Applied Social Studies under the direction of the Head of the School of Applied Social Studies for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University. The lecturer will also research and publish in the appropriate area. They shall in addition discharge such other duties appropriate to the post as shall be assigned to them by the Head of the School of Applied Social Studies. In particular, the post holder shall be required to undertake the following responsibilities:
- To teach and examine on existing courses at undergraduate, postgraduate and CPD level.
- To supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- To develop new courses and teaching materials.
- To have a central role in the co-ordination and promotion of research in collaboration with ISS21 and to generate research income.
- To develop research at international level and publish widely the research results.
- To contribute to the administrative duties of the School.

3. Selection Criteria

Essential Criteria
- A PhD degree in the Social Sciences.
- Experience of teaching and graduate supervision in third level education.
- Knowledge of administrative and co-ordination systems in academic settings.
- Evidence of published research in the Social Sciences.
- A knowledge of research funding systems and grant writing skills.
- A research interest relevant to one or more of the following areas: children, disability, housing policy, poverty, civil society, equality issues, community development, migration, health policy, and youth policy.
