3 Months Minimum Notice of Retirement
Notice to staff members who intend to retire on or before 29th February 2012
The Department of Education & Skills have advised that staff members intending to retire on or before 29th February 2012 i.e. during the “Grace Period”, are required to give 3 months’ notice of their date of retirement. As per the instruction issued to the University, the decision to retire is unconditional and applies to all retirements without exception. The retirement notice may not be withdrawn by the employee on or after the stated date of retirement (i.e. the last possible date for someone to withdraw their notice is the day before the planned retirement date e.g. 28 February 2012).
Please see the full circular below “3 Months Minimum Notice of Retirement” issued by the Department of Public Expenditure & Reform.
The “Grace Period” is the period during which the calculation of public service pensions is unaffected by the pay reductions applied under the Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest (No. 2) Act 2009.
As communicated previously, any potential discretionary Added Years are not guaranteed and are subject to the approval of the Minister for Education & Skills and Minister for Finance. Please note the Ministers’ decision may not be received in advance of your retirement date. In this event, retirement benefits will be paid without any potential added years. If a favourable decision is then received from the Ministers, retirement benefits will be adjusted appropriately and arrears paid in full.
