This first year course is a 15 credit module which is divided into 3 components

First Year Course Outline

Tutorials  - (5 credits)

These are held every week beginning the week of October 5 – the precise arrangements will be announced.  Tutorials will be provided by tutors from Departments of History and Geography.  Please check the time and venue of the tutorial group to which you are allocatedthis information will be posted on the European Studies notice board in the Geography Building.  You will remain in the same group throughout the first year.  Changes can only be considered during the first two weeks of the programme and must first be discussed with the person responsible for co-ordinating tutorials.

Tutorials are an essential part of your first year programme in that your assigned tutor will not only aid your appreciation of course work, but will also give you the opportunity of discussing other issues relevant to European Studies.  Participation and attendance at tutorials will be taken into account in determining your grade from this component of ES1001.

Essays

You are required to submit four essays during your first year programme from the following choice of topics:

First Essay: European Economies: Deadline 27th November 2009.  Select one title from:

1)      Economic realities have driven enlargement and deepening of the EU.

2)      With respect to any one country of the EU (other than Ireland), discuss the implications for national and regional development of its entry into and membership of the EU.

3)      Enlargement into Central and Eastern Europe has presented more opportunities than problems for the EU.

Second Essay: Bipolar world:  Deadline 11th December 2009.  Select one title from:

To be announced.

Third Essay: European Urbanisation:  Deadline 26th February, 2010.  Select one title from:

1)                  Examine the contemporary relevance of nineteenth century European urbanisation for poor countries.

2)                  Write an essay on: Transport: the shaper and destroyer of cities.

3)                  To what extent will European cities become more like those of America during the twenty-first century?

Fourth Essay: Europe: Post WW2: deadline 19th March, 2010. Select one title from:

To be announced.

Essays 1 and 3 must be submitted to Secretaries Office, Department of Geography, before 12 noon on specified dates.  Essays 2 and 4 must be submitted to Secretaries Office, History Department (Tyrconnell), before 12 noon on specified dates.

Late submission will incur penalties, unless accompanied by a medical certificate or other appropriate information.

Your first year examination results will be determined by the following equal breakdown of the module.
