'From theory to practice in International Development' was the theme of a seminar held in UCC on Friday November 4th from 11.30am-4pm in the Devere Hall, Student Centre, UCC, organised by the Department of Food Business & Development.

Students of UCC’s BSc in International Development and Food Policy undertake a 6-month developing world internship in the third year of their degree programme.  This afternoon seminar highlighted the students’ work which has taken them to a diverse range of different organisations in countries such as Colombia, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Laos, Madagascar, Palestine, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia with organisations including Africa Direct, CPALI, Gorta, Self Help Africa, Trocaire and the Hope Foundation.  Their work addressed key international development challenges including:

·        Food Security, Rural Livelihoods & Environmental Sustainability

·        Children's rights & Education

·        Human Rights, Marginalisation & Migration

Dr Michael B. Murphy, President of UCC welcomed all the attendees and Sean Sherlock TD (Minister of State, Department of Enterprise, Jobs & Innovation and Department of Education & Skills) gave the opening address.

The seminar was a great opportunity for development organisations, educational institutions and policy makers to interact directly with the next generation of Irish development professionals, affording an insight into their experiences of the opportunities and challenges facing development practitioners.
