Evening Courses, Workshops, Master Classes

Contemporary Cinema: Women Directors

This 12-week evening course focuses on six recent films by women filmmakers from around the world: Ondi Timoner’s We Live in Public (US, 2009), Claire Denis’ Beau travail (France, 1999), Lynne Ramsay’s Ratcatcher (UK, 1999), Mary Harron’s American Psycho (US, 2000), Ann Hui’s The Postmodern Life of My Aunt (Hong Kong, 2006) and Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker (US, 2008). This eclectic selection includes works that engage with distinctively female concerns as well as films that tackle conventionally male-centric subject matter—including war, military life and corporate masculinity.

Spanning forms such as art cinema, documentary and mainstream productions and extending across different geographical areas, societies and cultural perspectives, these films share a concentrated commitment to aesthetic imagination and narrative originality. Together, they provide a novel and fresh perspective on the contribution of women directors to contemporary world cinema.
