Undergraduate Degree Programmes On Offer
The degrees offered through the CK407 stream are:
- Mathematical Sciences
- Financial Mathematics and Actuarial Science
- Mathematics and Physics
- Applied Mathematics and Physics
The degree programmes are all of four years duration. There are no separate courses for honours and pass: all students take a common course for each degree and the final award obtained (honours or pass) depends on performance on this course.
The Mathematical Sciences degree enables students to concentrate their study in selected areas of mathematics, applied mathematics or statistics. The Financial Mathematics and Actuarial Science degree is a new degree programme . There are also special joint degree opportunities for students who enjoy both mathematics and physics. At UCC this diverse range of mathematically oriented degrees is available in a single CAO entry stream. This means that you do not have to decide which area of interest you would like to specialise in until the end of your first year in College
Better Opportunities for Students Who Like Mathematics at School
The CK407 First Year course makes a mathematical degree accessible to a much wider range of students than in the past. The stream is mathematically focussed, so the only subjects you must take in First Year are mathematical. After that you have a free choice. In the past, all students wishing to study mathematical sciences at UCC were required to take physics as a First Year subject. This is no longer the case (except for the joint degrees with physics). Students may now choose from a wide range of subjects in First Year, including business finance, economics and biology. The introduction of the new degrees provide more choices and career opportunities for students who like mathematics.
What Happens in First Year?
In First Year all students take 60 credits of course work, of which 40 credits are in the mathematical sciences (calculus and linear algebra, mathematical software, mathematical analysis, abstract algebra, mechanics, mathematical modelling, probability and statistics). Students choose the remaining 20 credits from business finance, economics, computer science, physics, biology, geology and chemistry.
Students do not decide which of the four degrees they wish to pursue until the end of First Year. Students wishing to pursue the joint degrees with Physics need to take 20 credits of physics in First Year.
