Prof. Elisabeth Okasha MA (St And), PhD (Cantab)
Elisabeth Okasha worked as a lecturer and professor in the Department of English, UCC, until taking up her present position as Acting Director in 2007. Her academic interests lie in the field of English Language with particular emphasis on the earliest periods of the language. She is still involved in the Department of English, with one remaining PhD student, and with teaching on the inter-disciplinary MA in Applied Linguistics. She is actively engaged in research and has to date published four books and some 60 papers in refereed journals.
Joe French, BA, HDip in Ed, LTCL (TCLond)
Joe French has 20 years of experience in teaching English as a foreign language, both in Ireland and countries abroad such as Italy and Canada. His experience covers teacher training, English for general, academic, and specific purposes .Before coming to the Language Centre, he was Director of Studies for a private school in Cork.
Joe has been working at the Language Centre for the last 10 years, and at present is a teacher. He also has qualifications in counselling, and his area of interest is in using techniques that he has learnt to encourage and motivate students in learning English. Richard Masterson, BA, DipEd, MA, DipTEFL (RSA),MPhil
Richard Masterson has taught English as a Foreign Language in France, Italy and Saudi Arabia and has been an educational administrator with the British Council in Saudi Arabia, Portugal and Venezuela and with International House in Egypt.
Richard is a teacher, teacher trainer (at Certificate and Diploma Level) and lecturer in Applied Linguistics at the Language Centre. He is particularly interested in the use of creative literature in language learning and the implications of Vygotskan theories of language learning for teaching and learning. He is currently doing empirical research in the area of Aptitude and Cognition in language learning. Richard can be contacted at RMasterson@langcent.ucc.ie
Brendan McEnery (B.A., M.A., H.D.E., D.E.L.T.A., MII Grad.)
Brendan McEnery has 20 years experience of teaching English as a foreign language, English for special purposes, English for academic purposes and EFL teacher training. He has worked in Ireland, UK, France and the Netherlands. Particular interests include teaching business English, foundation year programmes and examination preparation classes. Brendan Ó Sé MA Appl. Ling. RSA DTEFLA
Brendan Ó Sé has been working in the Language Centre of University College Cork since 1999. Prior to this he was Head of the English Department at The Stockholm School of Economics in Riga, Latvia. Brendan has been a teacher, educational administrator, and teacher trainer in private language schools in Ireland, and also has teaching experience in France, Spain, and Latvia.
Brendan uses the innovative Blackboard technology to augment and supplement his classes. The use of this online resource greatly improves the quality of the courses, and is proving hugely popular with his students. Blackboard allows students to access extra materials for learning English online, links to relevant English language learning websites, chat with fellow students and the teacher, read each others' homework, and play language learning games.
Brendan's current research interests include investigating language learners' beliefs, and also the use of information technology in helping students to maximise their learning potential. Brendan can be contacted at b.ose@ucc.ie
