Frequently Asked Questions

Here you can find the answers to a number of Frequently Asked Question. Further information is provided on the General Information page.

Classes

Will we have a test or examination at the end of our course?

Generally not. Some teachers may give you one or two progress review tests during the course, but many teachers do not. Many students often prepare for an external examination (Cambridge, IELTS or BEC Vantage) and this is usually taken at the end of the course.

Can I do a course at UCC without doing an external examination?

Yes. Even if some course participants prepare for an external examination, the lessons will be of great benefit to you, as the external examinations also focus on those language areas.

Can I do an external examination at UCC without doing a course at UCC?

Yes. You can register for an examination at UCC, and prepare for it on your own, or at another school. Some students prepare in the language laboratories of UCC using the books, tapes and CDs from our Resource Centre.

Will I move up to a higher level at the end of a course?

Possibly, but not automatically. At the end of the ten-week course, for example, your teacher will either recommend that you stay at the same level for the next term or that you move to the next level. In either case you will not need to take another placement test.

How many students are usually in a class?

The maximum number is 15, but an average is usually about 12.

What countries do they come from?

Students in the Language Centre mainly come from European countries, but we also have a large number from many other countries. Here is an example from one class - Juan (Spain), Maria (Spain), Yi Lee (China), Nancy (Argentina), Liliana (Poland), Mostafa (Saudi Arabia), Gert (Sweden), Sanda (Latvia) and Paolo (Italy).

Will I be given homework?

Yes. The homework will be corrected by your teachers.

Will I have to buy a course book?

This can depend on the teacher of your course. Some teachers design their own materials for class work, while others may follow a course book. If your teacher is using a course book, then you will need to buy it.

How can I know my English level?

Before beginning the course you will need to take a placement test (grammar, vocabulary, writing, and speaking). The test then determines your level and your class. Why not try our online test, and then read about your level?

Can I get a certificate at the end of the course?

The certificate will give information about your attendance and the level of the course. Should you require more detailed information you need to ask your teacher.

How many teachers will I have?

This may vary. It depends on the course you are following. Intensive courses usually have more than one teacher, while part-time evening courses may only have one teacher.

What are their qualifications?

All teachers have the highest qualifications in teaching English. More details on the present staff are available here.

Are they all native English speakers?

Yes.

What should I do if I have to make a complaint?

Firstly, talk to the teacher(s) and explain why you are not happy. If this does into solve the problem which you feel exists, go to the office (G.36) and fill out a complaint form. The Student Complaint Form (25kB) includes written instructions and tips about how to make a complaint.
