6.5 Months, Fixed-Term, Whole-Time Post
Position Summary
A position is available for a Post-Doctoral Researcher to work in the School of Physics and the Center for Research into Atmospheric Chemistry (Environmental Research Institute) at UCC. Under the direction of Prof. Andy Ruth (the Principal Investigator) and Prof. John Wenger (Co-Investigator) the successful applicant will be involved in a project to develop new instrumentation for trace gas and radical detection using an approach related to absorption spectroscopy using stable optical cavities or multi-pass cells. The new setup is to be operated in the mid-infrared and is to be custom-designed for the Irish Atmospheric Simulation Chamber (IASC), a national research facility for the investigation of chemical and physical processes with impact on air quality and climate.
The successful applicant will be embedded in a dynamic team of atmospheric researchers with expertise in the development and application of broadband cavity-enhanced absorption systems. S/he should have a strong innovative spirit with interest in applied research with commercialization potential. S/he should bring excellent organisational and communication skills to the group.
Expected Skill Set
We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated person with a high level of initiative, capable of working independently and within a team. The candidate should have fluent English and excellent communication, organization, planning and interpersonal skills.
The successful candidate should have a strong background in optics, IR spectroscopy, laser technology, electronics & interfacing, as well as expertise in the handling of gases in flow and static cells. Ideally, the candidate will have experience in atmospheric trace gas sensing, outstanding experimental, engineering and IT skills. Previous experience, in research with optical cavities, gas handling, relevant data analysis, report and proposal writing is highly desirable. Know-how in atmospheric sciences will be an advantage. Previous experience in industrial research and exposure pertaining to commercialization of innovation in the area of sensing is desirable.
Achievement of the expected progression within Post Doc and Senior Post Doc is transferable between the Irish HEI’s. This can be reflected in the starting pay of a PD researcher. Similarly, as the PD scheme is an intergenerational training scheme completion of PD1 or PD 2 levels in one HEI will normally render that researcher ineligible for appointment at a similar level in another Irish HEI Researcher Career Development Framework | Irish Universities Association
