ERI Showcase Video November 2008

27.11.2008

The ERI will be showcasing a number of its successful research projects on film at the Higher Education Authority’s forthcoming “Transformations” exhibition in the Science Gallery, TCD, from 27 November to 2 December.

In association with UCC Outreach TV the ERI has made a 20 minute film that highlights the strength and diversity of environmental research that is currently taking place in UCC by focusing on 6 different research projects within the Institute’s different thematic research areas. The film features interviews with researchers who discuss their research on topics such as generating biogas from grass, discovering novel drugs in marine sponges, smart buildings, air pollution from ships in Cork harbour and how Ireland is playing its part to protect its natural heritage through biodiversity research and seal tagging.  The ERI film can be viewed by clicking on the UCC weblink below:

The PRTLI10 exhibition (http://www.hea.ie/en/node/1204 ) has been set up to celebrate ten years of the Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI).

The PRTLI programme has radically altered the research landscape in Ireland and marked the introduction of a unique and innovative approach to enhancing research and education capability for the Irish academic community. To date in excess of €865 million has been allocated under the programme. The centre piece of the anniversary celebrations will be the launch of a commemorative book by An Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, on the 27th November. The book will be a visual and textual showcase of some of the most exciting PRTLI funded research underway in Ireland .

The ERI has benefited greatly from PRTLI which has been central to the rapid expansion of environmental based research at UCC.  The PRTLI 2 programme provided the vital funding for a building for the Institute. The ERI research groups created as a result of PRTLI 2 and 3 have subsequently successfully procured funding from both national and international sources for over 400 research projects since 2000.
