Janice is clinical data manager in Livinghealth Clinic (LHC). This role involves being project lead on a Clinical Data Management Strategy (CDMS). This is a collaborative strategy between the School of Public Health, University College Cork and the LHC. The aim of the CDMS is to support the recording of clinical data in a unified, logical and consistent manner, to enable integration, to ensure interoperability, to yield data for aggregation and primarily to improve routine data quality to support patient care. Janice has worked as a research support officer clinical for the School of Public Health since 2008. Prior to this she completed a Masters in Health Services Management in University College Cork. Janice has an intensive care nursing background and has worked for 20 years in nursing and nurse management roles in the acute health sector.

In addition to these roles Janice is a point-of-contact and support resource for research activity in the LHC e.g. the TRUST Study, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) studies, and PhD students undertaking research projects.

Up to fifty final medical students from the College of Medicine, University College Cork, and graduate entry medicine students from the University of Limerick come on placement to LHC annually. Janice provides assistance to the GP Tutor responsible for medical training in the LHC. This involves delivering induction training, data protection compliance training, and introducing students to the practice management software and to clinical disease coding practice. Furthermore Janice supports and supervises medical students with completing a clinical audit while on their GP placement. A structured audit programme is in place and ninety audits have been completed to date with many others re-audited. Quality improvement initiatives have been put in place as a result of audit recommendations. Poster presentations are given at national conferences and research papers based on completed audits have been submitted and accepted for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

Janice provides support to other students from University College Cork such as, the College of Arts, Celtic Studies & Social Sciences, and students from the School of Public Health BSc in Public Health & Health Promotion programme. Janice facilitates these placements and supervises and gives assistance to the students while they are in LHC. The students generally work on a research project, and data management and operational aspects of a busy primary care centre. In summation, Janice’s role involves the provision of support to scholarly and research institutions, collaboration with clinical colleagues, and managing the CDMS in the primary care environment.
