Dr. Richard Kavanagh

Biography

Dr. Richard Kavanagh obtained B.E. (Elec) and M.Eng.Sc. degrees from U.C.C. in 1984 and 1985, respectively, and was awarded a Ph.D. degree in 1998 from the National University of Ireland for work on improved analytical and design techniques for digital tachometry. He worked as a senior Project engineer with SPS Laboratories (Naas) from 1988 to 1990, and a Senior Research Scientist with PEI Technologies at U.C.C. from 1990 to 1992, before being appointed a College Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, where he is currently a Senior Lecturer. He has also been Dean of Engineering at U.C.C. since 2005. He served as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Signal Processing Letters from 2002 to 2005 and is a Senior Member of the IEEE and a Chartered Engineer. He directs the Mechatronics Research Laboratory at U.C.C. Since 2004 he has been UCC Coordinator of the Marie Curie Early Stage training programme ‘Electrical Energy Conversion & Condition’. His research interests include the mathematical analysis of quantized systems, the improvement of sensor-based systems through new signal processing hardware (DSP and FPGA) and software algorithms, and the application of such techniques to robotic, motion control, process automation, energy and automated mapping systems.
