BA (Economics)
Economics is the principal business subject in the BA (Hons) and opens up a whole range of career opportunities in finance, business, consultancy, the media and government. It develops analytical skills, problem solving skills, computer, data handling and presentation skills. These transferable skills are highly valued by employers.
At UCC, you can design your own BA (Hons) programme in Economics to match your particular interests and career plans. In Year 1 of the BA, you choose 4 subjects, of which one must be Economics if you want to continue it into second and third year. After Year 1, you can specialize in Economics by taking it as a:
- Single Subject (with another subject as a minor);
- Major Subject (Economics will make up 2/3 of your overall degree); or
- Joint Subject with another subject (In this case Economics will make up half of your overall degree).
In Year 3, you can specialize in:
- Business Economics
- Financial Economics
- Competitiveness & Innovation Economics
- Health & Evaluation Economics
- Political Economy
The Economics courses that you undertake in your BA degree are similar to those offered to students, studying other business programmes at UCC e.g. BComm.
You do not need to have Economics or Honours Mathematics in your Leaving Certificate to take Economics in University.
