Health Economics

Health and health care are dominant economic and political issues in Ireland and in many other countries. Since most nations have experienced rapid rises in health care spending over the past 30 years, it is not surprising that health economics has emerged as a distinct specialty within economics.

The economic problems of allocating resources to medical care have long been a major part of government economic policy. The steady rise in the expenditures on medical care, outstripping the rise in national income by a considerable margin, has brought these issues to the fore of public attention thereby highlighting the need of economic analysis to help in the construction and evaluation of health care policies.

In light of this evolving need for research into the health care sector, the Ph.D. degree in Health Economics is created so as to furnish students with all the necessary research skills to fulfil this need.

The Ph.D. in Health Economics is by research and thesis writing only. Students will be required to attend a Research Methods Workshop and seminars in relevant health topics. The thesis should normally not exceed 80 000 words. A supervisor will be provided for each Ph.D. student. The supervisor will provide guidance about the nature of research and the planning of the research programme.
