What is Computer Science?

Computer Science is a mixture of Science and Engineering and the application of these tools to solving today’s problems.
Science: theoretical results of eternal validity
Engineering:  Development of tools, based on current best Science

In practical terms, a Computer Science degree involves:

  • understanding software programs and applications,
  • using this understanding to create new programs,
  • understanding hardware, e.g., how to assemble a computer,
  • applying this knowledge to improving the way we live.

In 2009, Computer Science moved into the new hi-tech Western Gateway Building where students enjoy state-of-the-art laboratories and lecture theatres.

Computer Science in University College Cork offers a choice of degree programmes.  The BSc (Hons) in Computer Science is a full-time four-year degree programme leading either to:

The degree in Computer Science programme has recently been revised and updated, while the degrees in Web Systems Engineering, Software Entrepreneurship and Computer Science with Chinese are new programmes.  All courses comprise:

  • New common Year 1
  • Emphasis on early student success and satisfaction
  • Database-driven multimedia website development
  • Industrial experience in Year 1
  • Company site visits
  • Lectures from visiting industrial experts       
  • Streams in subsequent years:
  • Computer Science
  • Web Systems Engineering
  • New language option: Chinese
  • Other electives: Maths, Economics, Spanish, Italian, French, German
  • 6-month work placement in Year 3
  • Project in Year 4; Open Day showcase
  • Under-graduate research opportunities
