Graduate Studies in Computer Science, UCC
Computer Science postgraduate research degrees are monitored programmes of training and research. These can be an enriching experience, preparing candidates for high-level careers in industry and academia.
A Master's degree gives graduates an added advantage in a competitive job market, and may provide easier progression to mid-level management in mid-career, as companies typically look for people with a broad background and distinctive qualities.
Reasons for pursuing a PhD vary. The goal of pursuing a PhD degree is to make a new contribution to a chosen field. Consequently, the degree represents the pinnacle of academic achievement and thus is highly regarded both in industry and in academia.
A PhD degree can make a difference within more specialised high-level career paths, within industry, government or academia. For academic careers, a PhD is a minimum requirement. Most companies do not require the degree but some of the leading-edge "high-tech" firms focus on attracting candidates with the experience, training and flexibility afforded solely by such a qualification.
Some people pursue postgraduate research for the academic challenge of making a new contribution, others wish to specialise in a topic of personal interest or have particular career ambitions in mind. A PhD may, therefore, afford the "best of both worlds", leading to flexible and high-level interesting careers, bridging academia and "high-tech" industry.
If you wish to enquire about opportunities to participate in our postgraduate research programme, please complete our questionnaire and attach your CV. These will be circulated to academic staff within the Department, and individual staff members may follow up if they have a suitable research opportunity. All applications will be reviewed three times a year, and you will be informed in the next review period if an opportunity exists. Please submit your CV here.
