The Faculty Level

Recent changes of the collegial structure of the University mean that the Faculty of Commerce now forms part of the College of Business and Law, together with the Faculty of Law. This is as part of the review of the administrative and organisational structures of the University. Some of the information, practices and structures outlined in this handbook may be subject to change over the course of the year.

7.1 FACULTY MEMBERSHIP

The formal membership of the Faculty of Commerce includes all those who are entitled to attend the meetings of the Faculty. The Faculty is made up of Primary and Secondary departments.

In 2007-2008, the Primary Departments, which are represented by all department members eligible for Faculty membership, are: Accounting, Finance & Information Systems, Economics, Food Business and Development, Government, Law, Management & Marketing, and Statistics. The Secondary Departments, which are represented by one member of each relevant Department, were: Applied Psychology, French, German, Hispanic Studies, Italian, Mathematics, Modern Irish and the Institute of Chinese Studies. The Centre for Policy Studies is also within the Faculty of Commerce.

The following staff from the “Primary Departments” are automatically eligible for Faculty membership:

full or part-time professorsfull or part time statutory lecturerspermanent full-time College lecturers.

The following staff are eligible for co-option to the Faculty

Full-time academic staff in primary departments with a minimum of a one-year contractPart-time academic staff in a primary subject department who have a contract of at least five years and lead at least one courseA limited number of other co-options as deemed appropriate by Faculty.

The President, Registrar and Vice-President are ex-officio members of the Faculty of Commerce.

7.2 FACULTY COMMITTEES

The Faculty has a number of committees. The committees normally have a three year life-span which coincides with the term of the Dean and Assistant Dean. In addition to these Faculty Committees, the Faculty also has a number of Board of Studies specific to individual degree programmes.

Undergraduate Student Needs Committee

This Committee is charged with responsibility for enhancing the learning environment of students in the Faculty; the staff-student guide; schools liaison; schools open day; mature students; access students; special needs students; undergraduate student applications; undergraduate student admissions; monitoring student facilities in the Faculty of Commerce; and alumni. This Committee has a number of sub-committees dealing with, for example, Student Applications, Staff-Student Liaison, Schools Liaison, Mature Students, etc.

Teaching and Curriculum Development Committee

This Committee is charged with responsibility for: overseeing major developments within the curriculum of Commerce; considering minor changes to Courses and Regulations; considering changes to Marks and Standards; considering matters relating to examinations; reviewing quotas and selection procedures for entry/admission to the Faculty; reviewing the timetable.

Research and Postgraduate Studies Committee

This Committee is charged with responsibility for: promoting research within the Faculty; developing criteria and set standards for evaluation of research; identifying areas of research to be developed by Faculty; increasing research funding to the Faculty; enhancing collaborative research across the Faculty and with other departments in UCC; developing and promoting doctoral and post-doctoral research within the Faculty; identifying and promoting best practice in graduate studies in the Faculty.

Executive Management Group

This Committee is set up to advise the Dean on:

1. Allocation of resources including staffing to departments, schools and centres that attach to the Faculty for budgeting purposes

2. Strategic priorities for the Faculty and the implementation of Faculty strategy within the framework of the University's strategic plan

BComm Board of Studies

This board of studies is charged with responsibility to formulate ideas and policy recommendations for the future promotion and development of BComm Programme.

BComm [International] Board of Studies

This board of studies is charged with responsibility to exchange information, discuss, harmonise and review where possible teaching, organisational and student workload arrangements for the offerings of the various departments of the BComm [International] degree and in conjunction with the International Education Office to oversee arrangements for the year abroad.

MBA Management Board

This board is charged with responsibility for direction of the MBA Programme; to monitor performance of programme on an operational basis with regular meetings; to ensure resources, quality assurance, design, structure and organisational arrangements continue to meet international standards; to recommend and meet external examiners and reviewers of courses and programme; to monitor marketing activity.MBA Academic Board of Studies To manage on-going academic programme matters: courses and regulations; assessment - marking standards; grading of projects; examination results; external examiners; to receive reports on programme delivery including Quality Assurance; to promote an integrated approach to the development and operation of the MBA Programme.

Administrators Commitee

The Administrators Committee is charged with the responsibility to formulate ideas and recommendations for the smooth administration and management within Faculty and with particular emphasis on Faculty-wide issues.

Note: It is intended that a Faculty Library Committee will be established in the coming year.

7.3 ROLE OF THE DEAN

“Each Faculty shall elect from amongst its Members a Dean who shall hold office for three years, and shall be eligible for re-election. The Dean shall be the secretary and executive officer of the Faculty.” (Statute I; Chapter XI; The Faculties).

7.4 ROLE OF THE ASSISTANT DEAN

The Assistant Dean has responsibility for student issues, in particular, liaison with students and student welfare. As part of this role, the Assistant Dean liaises with college offices and support services, and reports to Faculty on relevant issues. Some details on how the Assistant Dean’s role could relate to you as a student are outlined in section 3.5.
