Welcome to The 60th Irish Universities Chemistry Research Colloquium

The School of Chemistry, University College Cork, is delighted to host the 60th Irish Universities Chemistry Research Colloquium.

The colloquium will commence on Wednesday 11th June and finish on Friday 13th June.

It will follow the format of recent years with a reception on the Wednesday evening followed by presentations all day Thursday and Friday morning. There will also be poster presentations which will be available for viewing during the coffee breaks. The colloquium will again highlight the outstanding research occuring in Irish third level institutions in the chemical sciences.

Welcome to the 60th Irish Universities Chemistry Research Colloquium!

It is one of my more pleasant duties as Head of the Chemistry Department at University College Cork to welcome you all to the 60th Irish Universities Chemistry Research Colloquium

The Irish Universities Chemistry Research Colloquium for postgraduate research students commenced in Dublin in 1948.  This 60th Colloquium is a significant milestone and an outstanding achievement and tribute to the quality and diversity of chemical research in Ireland.

The colloquium represents an annual forum for all young researchers in Ireland engaged in the chemical sciences to meet and discuss latest advances and achievements, as well as engage socially and relax with their peers, during what we know will be a very enjoyable occasion.

Once again this year’s attendance at the event is close to 400, a healthy reflection on the strength of the chemistry Schools and Departments within Ireland, and the result of the increased research funding that chemistry has managed to attract over the past decade.  The challenge may now be to continue to ensure chemistry is recognised in the coming years for its vital role in Irish Industry and economic sustainability, and it is you the young researchers attending this years meeting who will meet this challenge.

Under the auspices of the Institute of Chemistry of Ireland, the Chemistry Department at University College, Cork is delighted to host this year’s Colloquium and offers a warm welcome to all attendees, particularly those of you who are visiting University College, Cork for the first time.  As is always the case, the colloquium this year will provide the opportunity to witness the high research standards currently being carried out within Ireland, in both oral and poster presentations, and to meet Ireland’s future scientific leaders.  We are pleased to offer attendees what we hope will be a relaxed and enjoyable programme at this years colloquium, with ample opportunity to interact particularly during the colloquium social events.

The colloquium is generously sponsored by several companies, as listed within the programme and a sincere thank you to all of them and especially to Pfizer Corporation as the main sponsor.

On behalf of the Department of Chemistry staff and students at University College Cork, I warmly welcome you to the 60th Irish Universities Chemistry Research Colloquium, and hope you have an enjoyable, informative and productive meeting.

Jeremy D. Glennon,

Head of Department of Chemistry,

University College, Cork.
