3rd Annual Conference of the Asian Studies Ireland Association: Asia’s Rise and its Impact on Europe and Ireland: Challenges and Opportunities
The third annual conference of the Asian Studies Ireland Association (A.S.I.A.), which promotes the study, teaching & research of topics relating to Asia with a particular focus on the building of Irish understanding of developments in the world’s most dynamic region, took place at UCC. This coincided with UCC’s elevation in international rankings, as well as becoming the only Irish university with a five star rating in the QS World University Rankings. This in itself shows the importance of UCC in a globalised educational environment, a university with the largest number of Chinese students in Ireland. The School of Asian Studies, however, does not limit itself to a sole focus on China, but also focuses on Japan, Korea and India which are important players in Asia and important economic powers in their own right. UCC has the only Irish Institute of Korean Studies and Irish Institute of Japanese Studies, which shows how much the school of Asian Studies has grown in just a few years, as well as an increased market within Ireland for Asian Studies.
The conference brought together leading academics, experts and journalists from many fields related to different regions in Asia: discussing economics, politics and also some concerned with intellectual history and philosophy. This shows the importance of Asia for Irish and European academics who emphasised the importance of the inter-relatedness of the world today, as well as highlighting Ireland’s place in relation to Asia vis-à-vis trade, economic policies, and educational services. These important issues were also the main topics in the speech given by Eamon Gilmore TD, Tánaiste and Minister of foreign Affairs and Trade.
