Philosophy

Philosophy involves asking, and attempting to answer some of life’s biggest questions, what is morally right or wrong?
Do we have free will? How should societies be organised? Is there a God? What makes good or bad reasoning, and how can we identify it? Philosophy encourages the ability to appreciate and evaluate different points of view—both personal and cultural— through questioning, discussion and careful analysis.
The skills that philosophy teaches (critical thinking, clear analytic writing, creative problem solving, research and project management) are highly valued, wonderfully transferable, and open the door to a wide range of professions in the arts, law, politics, teaching, journalism and business.

Graduate Profile

Fiona Shaw – who you may know from the movies as Harry Potter’s aunt – is a graduate of philosophy in UCC. She is a leading theatre director and actress, and was awarded an honorary CBE in 2001.
