Applied Mathematics
|
The Department of Applied Mathematics (formerly, and now incorporating Mathematical Physics) is part of the School of Mathematical Sciences. The emphasis and primary focus of all programmes of study within the Department is on learning how to apply Mathematics to the formulation and solution of problems particularly in areas such as Economics, Finance and Geography as well as in traditional areas of Physics, the Biological Sciences and all disciplines of Engineering. Most problems in modern day Applied Mathematics can only be solved by making use of classical analysis together with numerical computational techniques, encompassing scientific programming, the use of sophisticated mathematical software libraries such as Mathematica, computer laboratory experiments and numerical analysis. The modules offered by the Department reflect these varied aspects of the subject providing the student with a tool box of, and practical experience in, developing problem solving skills. Module Description AM1052 Introduction to Mechanics (5 credits) AM1053 Introduction to Mechanical Modelling (5 credits) AM1054 Mathematical Software (5 credits)
