Folklore Postgraduate Shortlisted for Doctoral Showcase Award
The department was proud to see part-time lecturer and doctoral student Jennifer Butler shortlisted for an award in the Graduate Schools’ innovative Doctoral Showcase on June in UCC’s Devere Hall on Tuesday 21st 2011. The competition was open to all Colleges in UCC and she was one of a small minority of CACSSS postgraduates to progress this far in a competition with phenomenally high standards that pitted the hard sciences against the humanities. Candidates were required to give a ten minute presentation on their topic to judges and the public in general. The presentation was followed by questions from Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin of the adjudication panel. She presented key ideas and some findings on her fieldwork based research project on Witchcraft and Neo-Paganism in contemporary Ireland. The title ‘Its not All Cloak and Daggers’ and the presentation attracted great interest. Jenny’s work exemplifies innovative and original postgraduate research in folklore and ethnology and the department congratulates her and encourages others to follow her example.
