Applicants must log onto the Scholarship website: http://cis.chinese.cn, fill out the “Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Form”, please remember you must choose ‘UCC Confucius Institute’ as the recommended institution and ‘Shanghai University’ as the host university, and attach electronic files of the following materials:

1. Photocopy of Passport Bio-page

2. Photocopy of HSK and HSKK Result Report (if not ready can be updated during April 20th to 28th with online results if you take the test on Mar. 28)

“Confucius Institute Scholarship” is established by Confucius Institute Headquarters, with a goal of encouraging students and teachers worldwide, who are studying and/or teaching Chinese as a second language, to study Chinese language and culture in China.

Eligibility

1. Outstanding students from Confucius Institutes (Classrooms) worldwide;
2. Foreign teachers who are teaching or planning to teach Chinese as a second language;
3. Students who received distinguished grade from the Chinese Examination series held by Confucius Institute Headquarters;
4. Outstanding Contestants in “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition;
5. Students studying Chinese as a second language in overseas universities or colleges;
6. Applicants who meet the requirements of other of Confucius Institute Headquarters’ agreements.

Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good health.

Categories and Specific Criteria

1. Scholarships for Short-term Study

Duration for these scholarships is generally divided into 4 weeks, 1 semester and 1 academic year. Applicants are required to have a basic knowledge Chinese language level the and under the age of 55. For application of 1 semester or 1 year scholarship, which only focusing on 3rd year BA and BCOMM students studying in Shanghai University, you must pass HSK level 2 (score 120 or more) or 3 (score 180 or more) and HSKK elementary level (score 60 or more), and under the age of 35 except for some special cases.

2. Scholarships for Degrees

All scholarships applicants for degrees are required to have attended HSK and acquired Level 3 or higher certificate.
Bachelor’s Degree Scholarship: 4-5 academic years. Applicants are required to have a diploma comparable to a Chinese high school certificate, pass the Chinese university admission examination or be admitted by recommendation and without taking an admission exam, and under the age of 35.
Master’s Degree Scholarship: 2-3 academic years. Applicants are required to have a bachelor degree or a diploma comparable to a bachelor degree, and under the age of 45.

Doctorate Degree Scholarship: 3-4 academic years. Applicants are required to have a master’s degree or a diploma comparable to a master degree, and under the age of 45.

Details of the Scholarships

1. Exempt from registration fee, tuition fee, fees for basic learning materials and accommodation on campus

2. Monthly allowance are at the following rates ( CNY per month, in 2013 euro 1 equals CNY 8)
a. Short-term studying: CNY1,400
b. Bachelor’s Degree Students: CNY1,400
c. Master’s Degree Students: CNY1,700
d. Doctor’s Degree Students: CNY2,000

3. One-off settlement subsidy, at the following rates (CNY Yuan):
a. Students who will study in China for 1 academic year or more: CNY 1,500
b. Students who will study in China more than 1 semester, but within 1 academic year: CNY 1,000.

4. Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Benefit Plan for International Students in China is provided by Confucius Institute Headquarters for the scholarship students, in case of hospitalization for serious diseases and accidental injuries.

How to Apply

Applicants are supposed to submit their application materials to the following institution:

1. The Education (Culture) Department ( Section) in local Chinese Embassy and Consulate overseas.
2. Confucius Institutes worldwide such as UCC Confucius Institute.
3. Overseas Chinese Proficiency Tests centers recognized by Confucius Institute Headquarters.
4. Other institutions specified by Confucius Institute Headquarters.

Application Materials

Applicants must submit application materials to the recruiting institutions according to the following requirement (in duplicate):

  1. Completed “Application Form for Confucius Institute Scholarship” online at http://cis.chinese.cn
  2. Photocopy of the passport page with your photo on it;

3. Personal statements, indicating the applicant’s Chinese learning background, study plan and goals in China, etc. The statement should be no less than 200 words, printed in either Chinese or English and signed by the applicant. Detail research and study plan (additional paper can be attached) are required for students applying for master’s or doctorate degree;

4. Certificates of Chinese Proficiency, could be Chinese Proficiency Certificates and transcripts, or other certificates of Chinese language learning and/or education;

5.Diploma and transcripts(issued directly by the educational administration office of the school/university, and with a school cache); Applicants for undergraduate studies are required to provide notarized copy of senior high school transcripts. Documents in language other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized translations in Chinese or English; Applicants for Master’s or Doctorate Degree are required to submit two letters of recommendation in Chinese or English by professors or associated professors;

6. Applications under the age of 18 should submit letters of approval and provide emergent contact of their legal guardians;

Selection of Institutions

Applicants can select 3 institutions as personal preference from the list of Chinese higher institutions or secondary schools designated by Confucius Institute Headquarters. Contacts between applicants and their target institutions are encouraged. Please attach the admission letters from the target institution to the application materials, if there’s any.

Approval

1. Confucius Institute Headquarters will review all the application materials from the appointed authorities and is authorized to make necessary adjustments on the applied institutions and duration of study. The qualified applications will be forwarded to institutions and the final decision on whether to admit the applicants will be made by them;

2. Recommended by their current institution, scholarship applicants currently attending Chinese secondary schools or higher institutions could be officially awarded the Confucius Institute Scholarship;

3. Confucius Institute Headquarters will send the List of Acceptance to relevant recruiting institutions;

Registration

Students who are awarded the scholarship are required to register in the designated institution within the specified deadline. The privilege of the scholarship would be withdrawn, if one could not register in time.

Chinese Government Scholarship scheme is established by the Ministry of Education of P.R. China (hereinafter referred to as MOE) in accordance with educational exchange agreements or understandings reached between Chinese government and governments of other countries, organizations, education institutions and relevant international organizations to provide both full scholarships and partial scholarships to international students and scholars. MOE entrusts China Scholarship Council (hereinafter referred to as CSC) to manage the recruitment and carry out the routine management of Chinese Government Scholarship Programs.

This scholarship,provided by the Shanghai government for international students studying in Shanghai,is in 2 types: A & B. Type A, exclusively for those who study for master’s or doctoral degrees, is a full scholarship, including tuition, free accommodation, accident insurance and 1700 RMB of allowance for living; Type B, only for those who study for degrees, is a partial scholarship, only covering tuition fees; a hard copy of applications should be submitted directly to Shanghai University. 


How to apply for Shanghai Government Scholarship
1. Log on to http://www.study-shanghai.org/ and register with all the documents required.

Download the application forms from “download forms” column and fill in them.
2. Submit all the required files in A4 paper (including application form) to the Enrollment Office, we do not accept email application.
3. Enclosed with language proficiency certificates such as HSK, diplomas or certificates and passport copy.
4. A type (full scholarship including living allowance and tuition fee) or B type (partial scholarship including only tuition fee) scholarship is only for Master and Doctor degree students and you can apply from Mar. 30 to May 30 each year.
5. Recommendation letters are supposed to be sealed by professors who write the letters before submitting.

MA Program for International Trade(For the overseas students)


1. Program Objective:The graduate students are expected to: learn Economics, Econometrics, International Economics, International Trade and Practices, and Law of International Trade, know the actual conditions of China, especially for the development of economy under the policy of reform and opening to the outside world, understand the international trade of China, especially for the economic trade growth between the countries or districts of the overseas students and China. After learning the professional knowledge, the graduate students are also required to lay a solid foundation on basic theories and required specialized knowledge, to be able to conduct scientific research to a certain degree , to apply the acquired knowledge in his/her dissertation and future work..

3. Requirements of Curriculum and Research
3.1. All the major courses are taught in English
3.2. The students are required to master Chinese according to the curriculum during the study
3.3. Theme, literature reading report, and dissertation can be prepared in English

4. Graduation Certificate and Diploma of Master Degree
After the successful oral defense and evaluation by the school committee, graduate department of the university and academic degrees committee of the university, a graduation certificate and a diploma of master degree of Economics of People’s Republic of China will be issued to the student.

 Enrollment procedures and requirements for HSK winner scholarship programme

HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) is a standardized Chinese governmental proficiency test to measure the proficiency of Chinese for non-native speakers. Since established in 1991, it has been held in China and abroad regularly each year.  

With the deepening of China's reform and the extension of the international cultural exchange, the number of the people learning Chinese is on the rise. In order to encourage the examinees with excellent performance in the test and help them to fulfill their wish to further their study in China, the Chinese government specially established the HSK Winner Scholarship Program so as to sponsor the winners to study courses as Chinese literature, history, philosophy and economics. The China Scholarship Council (hereinafter referred to as the CSC) is entrusted by the Ministry of Education of China to take charge of the applications for and management of the scholarship. The CSC welcomes youths with deep interest in Chinese language and culture from all over the world to study in China.

The duration and details of the Scholarship

The duration of the HSK Winner Scholarship Program lasts for one year 

Winners are entitled to free tuition, free lodging, free teaching materials and free medical care.

Winners are entitled to the same amount of living allowance as the general scholars of Chinese government scholarship (the current amount of living llowance is RMB 800 Yuan per month).

The scholarship winner shall bear their own expenses for international trip.  

Qualifications of the candidates  

  • Candidates must be of non-Chinese nationality.
  • Candidates' mother tongues are not Chinese.
  • Candidates must have obtained the Certificate of Chinese Proficiency.
  • Candidate must have obtained academic credentials higher than secondary schools, and must be healthy and under age of 45.  

Application procedures  

The Secretariat of the CSC, on the basis of the "List of the Candidates of the HSK Winners" provided by the State Commission of the Chinese Proficiency Test, will provide the Application Form for HSK Winner Scholarship Program to the HSK winners via the Chinese Embassy or Consulate.

The candidates of the scholarship must direct send the filled out application form and other materials to the secretariat of the CSC by May the 15th. The materials must be attached with the address, fax and telephone number of the candidates.  

Enrollment, Visa Application and Registration  

If the application is approved, the secretariat of the CSC will directly send the candidates the Admission Notice and Visa Application Form for Foreigners Wishing to Study in China (JW201).

Scholarship winner shall apply for the Student (X) Visa to the Chinese Embassy or Consulate with the above materials, and directly register at the institution of higher learning between September 1st and 5th in person.

If, for whatever reason, the candidates cannot come to China at the set academic year, the scholarship will be canceled and cannot be extended.
