Cork City

Cork city is the second largest in the Republic of Ireland and is geographically situated at about 52 degrees latitude on the south coast of Ireland. It enjoys a pleasant mild climate with maximum summer temperatures of 25 degrees and minimum winter temperatures of -3 degrees. The greater Cork area has a population of c.300,000. There is a good mixture of commercial, educational, industrial, sporting and tourist interests in the area.

St. Finbarr's Cathedral

Buses operate around the city at a flat rate of €1.30.
To get to UCC from Patrick Street take the No. 8 (marked ‘Bishopstown’) which runs every 15 minutes, ask to get off at Gaol Cross or take the No. 5 (marked ‘Rossa Avenue’) which runs about every 15 minutes, ask to get off at College Road.

St. Patrick's Hill

Cork Airport is located four miles from the university and there are regular flights to Europe and several daily flights to Great Britain including London. The most efficient means of transport from the airport to UCC is by taxi at a fare of approximately €10.00 A bus service also operates from the airport to the city centre every hour at a fare of €4.50.

Go to the Cork City Council web-site to find out more about the city.

Campus and College

University College Cork was founded in 1845 and has a population of c.13,500 students. The university consists of four colleges: Art, Celtic Studies and Social Scince; Busniess and Law; Medicine and Health; and Science, Engineering and Food Science. There are post-graduate opportunities in each faculty. The College Calendar contains full details of all courses in UCC. The campus buildings which are close to the centre of Cork city pleasantly combine early and modern architecture along a riverside garden setting. The size, location and layout of the campus combine successfully to create a warm and personal charm conducive to learning.

Banking on Campus

It is of great benefit to students to establish a banking connection as soon as possible preferably with Allied Irish Banks Ltd or Bank of Ireland Ltd located on or near the campus. The staff of these banks have a good understanding of student's financial arrangements. A deposit account is the obvious account to open because there is no cheque book involved and your funds earn interest from the date of deposit. Unfortunately, there is no source of money through trusts or from the college to help overseas students financially. However, if there is a delay in receiving money from abroad or some unexpected event occurs the advice of the Overseas Student Officer should be sought.

Religion

There is complete freedom of religious worship in Ireland. All students are welcome to visit the chaplaincy centre. A prayer room for Muslim students is located on Campus. Further details available from the International Student Office.

Student Services in the University

In addition to the International Student Office the College has a full array of student services viz Accommodation and Student Activities, Careers and Appointments, Catering, Ombudsman, Physical Education, Student Counsellor, Student Health and various Student Union services.

Methods of Study

College lecturers tend to give general lectures and students are often expected to do more in depth work on their own. This may be in contrast to the previous experience of overseas students where greater and more specific direction is given in what to read and write. If a student is unsure of how to go about gathering information and presenting it there is always help at hand through the College tutors and staff and through fellow students. The Student Counsellor is available for consultation on developing study skills.

All lectures are available in English.
