Presentations and research news by Professor Peter Herrmann, Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the School of Applied Social Studies
- During a recent 3rd OECD World Forum on 'Statistics, Knowledge and Policy' in Bangkok the Social Quality Approach had been awarded great attention, its presentation being recognised as having a "good balance between good conceptual analysis and practical implementation, and the approach has built more reliable indicators and contributed to the better policy-making. It is, without question, at the forefront of OECD's visionary initiative." This suggests that the work on Social Quality is now directly being discussed on a high level, together with approaches as Human Development, capability approach and others. Peter Herrmann, for several years advisor to the European Foundation on Social Quality, who closely cooperated with the National Taiwan University has been asked to cooperate on a background document for another conference, scheduled for December, taking place in Bangkok.
- 'Social Services in the EU: Quality, standards and privatization' at the Savonia University of Applied Sciences, Iisalmi Campus, Finland. For further information see 'Time to Say Goodbye: Looking back on twenty years'.
- NGO Forum '09, Oerebro, Sweden at the end of October: This presentation will deal with participatory democracy and the role of civil society in governance in the perspective of the Lisbon Treaty. This continues debate which took place last year in the Czech Republic in which Prof. Herrmann was also involved.
- Prof. Herrmann recently took part in an innovative teaching project in his position as Professor for Cooperative Studies at the University of Kuopio (from 2010: University of East-Finland). His lecture was the first in a series of recorded lectures that are used in 9 Universities across the country within the framework of a special course for students of cooperative studies and social economics. The recorded lectures will be used in a complementing set of e-learning material, lectures in the class room and tutorials. It is a new project, entailing 9 universities and will be re-evaluated at a later stage. The recorded lectures will be later made available as stand-alone presentations on the William Thompson Website (Sideway).
