Masters in Planning and Sustainable Development (MPlan)

The Department of Applied Social Studies has joined with the Departments of Geography and Sociology to set up UCC’s new Programme in Planning and Sustainable Development.  It offers a two year taught masters course - known as the M.Plan - that prepares graduates for professional careers in town and country planning, regional planning, spatial planning, sustainable development and related environmental fields.

The core M.Plan teaching staff are professionally qualified planners based in these three departments. They are supported by lecturers from a range of other departments and units from across the University as well as by specialist lecturers and guest contributors from outside UCC.

The Chair of the M.Plan Board of Studies is Prof. Fred Powell, Head of the Dept. of Applied Social Studies, UCC. Other department representatives on the course executive are Dr. Cathal O’Connell and Mr. Steven Baxter.

Students from the foundation year class, drawn from a wide variety of undergraduate disciplines, are preparing to sit their final examinations in May 2008.  Professional accreditation procedures for the course are also underway with the Irish Planning Institute and the Royal Town Planning Institute and these are expected to be complete by July 2008.
