Working with young people: A national study of youth work provision and policy in contemporary Ireland
Researchers: Fred Powell, Martin Geoghegan, Margaret Scanlon, Katharina Swirak
This study provides an analysis of the results of the
National Study of Youth Work Provision and Policy in Contemporary Ireland
conducted in 2008 and in-depth interviews with a sample of policy makers, heads
of youth work organisations, as well as youth workers and volunteers. By
seeking to describe the contemporary socio-economic scope of youth policy and
youth work in Ireland, as well as to analyse several policy debates currently
taking place in the Irish youth work sector from an independent vantage point, this
study constitutes a unique piece of research. As the first independent and
national study of youth work provision in Ireland, this report offers a
valuable addition of materials for critically reflecting on the changing
contexts and frameworks of Irish youth work provision and policy. The study was
conducted as an integral part of the research project Civil Society, Youth and
Youth Policy in Modern Ireland, funded by the Irish Research Council for the
Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS). Contact Professor Fred Powell for further information: f.powell@ucc.ie. A copy of the research report and slides from the conference are available below.
