UCC Amnesty Society: Past, Present and Future
Amnesty UCC is a thriving new society. It has been present for many years in UCC however it is only in the last few years that Amnesty has become very much active and part of the varied and colourful fabric that is UCC!
Last year we concentrated on Two campaigns: Zimbabwe and the campaign against human trafficking.
We held a debate on Human Trafficking in Ireland ( yes it does very much exist) that included Simon Coveney, Dan Boyle, Kathleen Lynch and Mary Crilly (Chairperson of the Stop Human Trafficking Campaign in Cork). Through this debate we made important links with Amnesty Cork Group.
We also had a fundraising activity at Christmas in conjunction wtih the One World Society, selling fair trade amnesty products to great success. We hope to build on this idea in the coming months! Watch this space...
A big part of last year was the campaign relating to Zimbabwe. It was an still is a current affairs issue. We made a message of solidarity in the form of a large mural with personal messages from the people of UCC on a sheet of material. We also held a play titled "Footprint of Roses" which had featured in the National Amnesty congress.
And more of the same and more of different to come in, what I am sure will be, the most exciting year that amnesty has ever had!
