The College of Science, Engineering and Food Science offers a wide choice of programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and is renowned internationally for the quality of its teaching and research. Over 3,000 undergraduate students and 1071 postgraduate students, including more than 550 PhD students, currently study in the College which provides an outstanding research-led curriculum to all undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Academics and researchers in the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science have a strong track record of attracting prestigious research funding and are involved in international collaborations with colleagues throughout the world. This makes the College an exciting environment for research and teaching, and provides a vigorous and challenging academic atmosphere for students.
The College also has strong links with industry and commerce through pioneering strategies for technology transfer and commercialisation of research. The growth of high technology industry in the Cork region has been significantly encouraged by increased research investment in the College. The staff in the College are closely linked with UCC’s world class research centres such as the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre, the Analytical and Biological Chemistry Research Facility, the Biosciences Institute, the Boole Centre for Research in Informatics, the Cork Constraint Computation Centre, the Environmental Research Institute, and the Tyndall National Institute, and industry-focused research and training units such as the Power Electronics Research Laboratories, the BioTransfer Unit and the Food Industry Training Unit. The College also has a strong record of delivering on the commercialisation of research which is channelled through the Office of Technology Transfer in UCC.
The College operates a very successful student mentoring scheme, where all first year students are assigned a mentor from the academic staff. The mentors provide support and advice to the students to help them with any issues they may have. The College also operates a Peer Assisted Learning Scheme, where students benefit from interaction with peers and other students.
The College of Science, Engineering and Food Science is a world-class location for study and research.
