The 2013 UCC Alumni Achievement Awards was held on the 29th November in the Aula Maxima, where UCC honoured four distinguished alumni with Alumni Achievement Awards for outstanding achievements in their career or life work. On the night UCC also honoured a fifth graduate with an Alumnus Achievement Award for Voluntary Service to UCC for his outstanding voluntary contributions to the University. Each Awardee was presented with a specially commissioned silver trophy, designed by Don O’Mahony, Silversmith which takes its inspiration from the old adage 'Mighty Oaks from Little Acorns Grow’. Profiles of Award Recipients:
Leslie Buckley (BSc ’67, MSc ‘69) is the recipient ofthe College of Science, Engineering & Food Science Alumnus Achievement Award. Leslie is one of Ireland’s most distinguished business leaders. Leslie helped manage the start-up of Esat Telecom Group plc and Esat Digifone Limited and he held the position of Chief Operations Officer of Esat Telecom in 1996 and 1997. He established his own consultancy business in 1990 and has been retained on key public and private sector restructuring projects in Ireland. Leslie is currently the Executive Chairman of The Saon Group, one of the fastest growing online recruitment companies in the world. He is also the Executive Chairman of Independent News & Media (INM), Vice Chairman of Digicel and a director and shareholder of a number of other Irish companies. Leslie established The Haven Partnership in 2009, a charitable foundation which provides housing for the poorest of the poor, in countries like Haiti.
Jim Clarken (MBA ’02) is the recipient ofthe College of Business & Law Alumnus Achievement Award. Jim is Chief Executive of Oxfam Ireland. Jim is recognised for his outstanding leadership in international development. Jim is an Executive Director of Oxfam International and plays a key leadership role within the global Oxfam organisation, in overseeing the worldwide transformation of the confederation in recent years. He is Chair of Dóchas, the umbrella organisation for all non-governmental organisations in Ireland, and previously worked with Chernobyl Children’s Project as well as with GOAL in Southern Sudan. Jim is a frequent contributor to political debate and was the lead spokesperson at the recent G8 summit on key development issues. Jim has 15 years’ experience working at senior management level in the private sector.
Una Fox (BA ’89) is the recipient of the College of Arts, Celtic Studies & Social Sciences Alumnus Achievement Award. Una is Vice President Business Technology with the Walt Disney Company in California and is acknowledged as being one of the most influential women in technology. Una has focused her career on linking technology capabilities to business models and creating new revenue opportunities for leading international brands and Fortune 100 companies. She has worked with Yahoo and has also consulted with global brands including, Cisco, Microsoft and Google during her tenure at KPMG Consulting. Una is a co-founder of CoderDojo in Los Angeles. She is a board advisor to the Ireland/US Alliance and the Irish Technology Leadership Group (ITLG) based in Silicon Valley.
Patrick O’Leary (MB ’68) is the recipient of the College of Medicine & Health Alumnus Achievement Award. Patrickis a distinguished spinal surgeon and former Chief of the Spine Service at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York, the world leader in orthopaedics. Patrick currently serves as an associate attending spine surgeon, specialising in the surgical management of disorders of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. He also has a special interest in the areas of surgical technology and advances in surgical technique, collaborating with colleagues in Europe and the US. Patrick O’Leary is consistently named a top doctor in New York magazine’s ‘Best Doctors’ issue and he is also included in a select group of physicians named as one of ‘America’s Top Doctors’ and’ how to find the Best Doctors in New York’, all published by Castle Connolly. Patrick was honoured with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from Hospital for Special Surgery in New York in 2012.
Denis O’Mullane (BDS ’60, PhD ’71) is the recipient of the Alumnus Award for Voluntary Service to UCC. Denis is being honoured for his long-standing and dedicated contribution to dentistry, sport and enhancing alumni relations at UCC. Denis O’Mullane is one of Ireland’s leading experts in oral health research and was Professor and Head of the Department of Oral Health & Development at Cork University Dental School from 1982 to 2002. He was the founding Director of the Oral Health Services Research Centre established in 1983 and is also credited with publishing over 100 peer-reviewed international journals. Denis was Head of Cork University Dental School & Hospital from 1994-1998 and was a member of the UCC Governing Body from 1995 to 1998. Denis has acted as a mentor to many generations of students, dentists and dental researchers and continues to gives unstintingly of his time and expertise to mentoring postgraduate students and junior researchers. Denis has been an active supporter and promoter the interests of the UCC Hurling Club. Most recently, Denis co-wrote a book on the history of Cork University Dental School & Hospital to mark the 100 year anniversary of Cork's Dental School. Denis has also taken a leadership role in growing the UCC dental alumni network organising many reunions and gatherings over the years.
