2003 UCC Alumni Achievement Awards
Outstanding achievers in the fields of science, medicine, law, arts, commerce, engineering and food science and technology were honoured by UCC at the 2003 UCC Alumni Achievement Awards Ceremony in UCC on Friday 5 December 2003. The seven UCC graduates who were honoured are:
JIM BARRY (BComm '89, MBA) – Chief Executive of NTR Plc. Currently Chairman of IBEC’s Public Private Partnership Advisory Council – making him a key player in the development of Ireland’s infrastructure.
DR COLMAN CASEY (BSc '78, PhD '83)– MD, Schering Plough (Brinny). Dr Casey has overseen the expansion of the Cork site, which now employs 900 people, many of whom are UCC graduates. Colman is dedicated to the promotion of science in schools and leads Schering Plough’s Science Awareness Programme.
MEL MERCIER (BMus '89, MA) - Lecturer at UCC’s Department of Music teaches Irish Traditional Music and Ethnomusiciology including African drumming. He is an outstanding performer of Irish traditional music and an excellent composer for the stage including international performances in New York, London and Paris.
DR GERRY MURPHY(BScDy '76, PhD '80) - was appointed Chief Executive of UK retail group Kingfisher Plc in October 2002 with sales in excess of £10bn sterling in 2002. Dr Murphy has been Chief Executive of Carlton Communications plc. He previously held the position as Chief Executive of Grencore Group plc before taking up the position of Chief Executive of Exel plcs – formerly NFC plc, one of the world’s largest logistics and moving-services companies.
DR VINCENT POWER (BCL '84, LLM, PhD)- Partner with A & L Goodbody Solicitors, Dublin and head of the A& L Goodbody Solicitors EU, Competition and Regulatory Law Unit and a leading practitioner and author on EU and Irish competition law.
PROFESSOR MAURICE WHELAN - As Founder and Vice Chairman of Silicon & Software Systems (S3), Professor Whelan has contributed enormously to the Microelectronic Design Industry in Ireland helping position this country as a recognized leader in the high tech industry.
PROFESSOR PAUL WHELTON - Senior Vice-President at Tulane University, New Orleans and a world expert on public health. He has held the position of Visiting Professor in the US and international universities and published extensively.
