... ACE (Adult Continuing Education) at UCC has launched a new diploma course to address the needs of people who work with young people in community based physical activation
Bernard Allen, who is a member of the Board of the Irish Sports Council and a Former Minister for Sport launched the new course at UCC on Wednesday. It addresses a serious lacuna in the training of both volunteers and professionals as practice to date has been to either concentrate training in sport and physical activation on one side or on the social skills for youth and community work on the other.
This course will address a range of skills across both fields and will include both classroom theory and hands-on practical application of those skills in a sports hall context
Youth and Community Work and Sports Coaching/Facilitation are traditionally seen as distinct areas of expertise but each discipline draws on skills sets used commonly in the other area. This course is designed for those currently working or interested in working with a wide range of groups based in the community who use physical activities for developmental and/or activation purposes.
The course is geared towards those who may have substantial experience in these areas but may not have had traditional educational opportunities and the curriculum is designed to support those students in the development of academic skills but also in the development of practical skills in running activity groups in the community.
