APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Programme application forms are available from Adult Continuing Education.  Completed application forms should be submitted by post and must include the following:

  • Processing fee of €30 or €50 (see below)
  • 1 passport sized photograph for student card – please print name on back
  • Birth certificate (certified copy accepted)
  • Marriage certificate(if wishing to register in married name)
  • IELTS or TEOFL cert (if required)
  • Evidence of leaving certificate or other programmes passed where required – see entry requirements for programme you are applying for

A Non-refundable processing fee of €30 (early closing date) or €50 (final closing date) applies.  Cheque or postal order is acceptable only.  Please make payable to University College Cork.

Please note – A reduced processing fee of €30 applies to all completed application forms received on or before 29th July 2011.  €50 applies to completed application forms received between 29th July 2011 and 12th September 2011.  Applications may not be accepted after September 12th 2011.  Please note that some of the programmes may have earlier closing dates as indicated in the programme description.

AUDIT STUDENT
If you wish to register as an Audit student (attend lectures and not submit assignments for assessment or receive award) on an Adult Continuing Education programme the same application procedures apply. Audit students are liable for full course fees.

TUITION FEES

  • Each Programme has a tuition fee.
  • Programme Fees are payable in two instalments in October and January of the relevant year of study.
  • A Bank Giro will be issued once you have been accepted.
  • The Bank Giro will be your official receipt once fees are paid for tax purposes.  Students can pay fees using the Bank Giro system or online through the sit.ucc.ie student portal, instructions on using the online payment facility will be sent with your giro form.
  • Cancellation deadlines are listed below.
    • Up to 31st October 2011 liability for fees is 0%.
    • 1st November 2011 - 31st January 2012 liability for fees is 50%.
    • After 31st January 2012 liability for fees is 100%.

Withdrawal from a Programme

All withdrawals from programmes must be notified to Adult Continuing Education by email to k.hennessy@ucc.ie or in writing: Ms. Karen Hennessy, Registration, Adult Continuing Education, UCC.


Grants/Awards/Scholarships

Sponsorship forms are available on request from ACE for students in receipt of scholarships.  Students on Grants/Awards/Scholarships should note that where the amount of the scholarship is insufficient to meet the full fee balance, the student must pay the balance through the Bank Giro system.

PROGRAMME INFORMATION
Within each programme outline you will find specific details on Programme Content, Entry Requirements, Venue, Duration, and Contact Personnel. Adults registering on Adult Continuing Education programmes with the University regardless of location will: 

  • Receive a student identity card which provides students with access to University services including the Library, Clubs, Societies etc. Reduced membership to the University Sports and Leisure facilities at the Mardyke Arena also applies.
  • Be eligible to apply for scholarship to the Gaeltacht.
  • Receive the support of a dedicated Programme Coordinator per programme who acts as a link between the student and Adult Continuing Education. 
  • Receive a Programme Handbook outlining all relevant course information e.g. Timetable, Programme Content, Essay/Assignment Titles, Reading Lists, Communication Procedures etc.
  • Receive a copy of Learning Strategies Resource material outlining the normal transition process for adult learners. It also includes practical guidance on writing essays, note taking, reading academic books and where to find support.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

All applicants whose first language is not English must have attained the appropriate IELTS Level or the equivalent TOEFL score.  Original or Certified True Copies of IELTS or TOEFL score must be submitted when applying for our programmes.  Original copies will be returned.

IELTS & TOEFL

IELTS:
IELTS is the International English Language Testing System.  It measures ability to communicate in English across all four language skills - listening, reading, writing and speaking - for people who intend to study or work where English is the language of communication.  IELTS has a validity period of no more than two years from the date of the test.

TOEFL:
What is the TOEFL Test?

  • The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) measures the ability of a nonnative speaker of English to use and understand English as it is spoken, written, and heard in college and university settings.
  • The TOEFL test is offered in different formats depending on a test taker's location.

Exemptions from ACE Modules

In some cases students may be granted an exemption from certain modules or first year of a programme, but only if they have satisfactorily completed the equivalent content of the module/programme in question. Students must formally apply in writing to Adult Continuing Education within three weeks of the commencement of the programme and enclose all the relevant documentation illustrating their successful completion of an appropriate accredited programme from a recognised academic institution. The Adult Continuing Education Committee will make the final decision with regard to granting exemptions.
