New selection criteria for Undergraduate Entry to Medicine 2009
17 Aug 2009
The combined scores (adjusted Leaving Certificate points and HPAT-Ireland results) of those offered places in Medicine in 2009 ranged from 713 to 779.
Within the combined scores the Leaving Certificate results ranged from 520 to 600 points and the HPAT-Ireland scores ranged from 153 to 225.
Two interesting features of the new selection process which are immediately apparent are:
a ) More even gender balance with (48% male and 52% female which compares to 40% male and 60% female in 2008).
b) There has been a significant increase in the number of students securing places on the first sitting of the Leaving Certificate (83% in 2009 compared with 59% in 2008).
Early indications are that the new selection process has widened access to Medicine.
Further analysis will be undertaken by institutions over the coming weeks
