TEDxUCC organised by the School of Medicine at UCC took place on the 27th of October and focused on simulation in health care education.
Three speakers Professor Richard Satava, Dr. Padraig Cantillon-Murphy and Dr. Marian McCarthy from diverse academic backgrounds of medicine, engineering and the humanities shared their views on this increasingly important area in health care education.
Richard Satava MD, Professor of Surgery at the University of Washington Medical Centre and Senior Science Advisor at the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command in Ft. Detrick, discussed his experiences of simulation in surgery and advocated the use of simulation in both the training and assessment of surgeons.
Padraig Cantillon-Murphy, lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at UCC, clearly and carefully explained the use of magnets in biomedicine, in particular, in the area of minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Cantillon-Murphy’s current research is based on magnetic self-assembly, MRI and minimally invasive surgery.
Marian McCarthy, Programme Coordinator for the Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma and Masters in Teaching and Learning at UCC gave an incredible stage performance as coordinator of a simulated Major Disaster. From this, she explored the complex and multi-layered simulation afforded by role-playing. Dr. McCarthy’s interests include the role of Drama and Theatre in Education, Applied Drama/Theatre, the Visual Arts and Mime and Dance.
In the spirit of "ideas worth spreading," TED has created TEDx. TEDx is a programe of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxUCC, where x = independently organized TED event. At TEDxUCC, TEDTalks video and live speakers combined to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx programme, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organised.
About TED
TED is a nonprofit organisation devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 26 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. At TED, the world's leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Talks are then made available, free, at http://www.ted.com
TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Benoit Mandelbrot, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Two major TED events are held each year: The TED Conference takes place every spring in Long Beach, California (along with a parallel conference, TEDActive, in Palm Springs), and TEDGlobal is held each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland.
TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world; and the TED Fellows programme, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
