Biography

After receiving his PhD in Philosophy from the London School of Economics, Dr Evans did postdoctoral research in philosophy at King’s College London and in robotics at the University of Bath before moving the University of the West of England (UWE) where he was Senior Lecturer in Intelligent Autonomous Systems. He moved to the School of Medicine at University College Cork in September 2008.

Dr Evans is the author of several popular science books, including Emotion: The Science of Sentiment (Oxford University Press, 2001) and Placebo: The Belief Effect (HarperCollins, 2003) and has given numerous talks at festivals of science and literature. He is a member of the Health Decision Making Research Group in the School of Medicine at University College Cork, a Distinguished Supporter of the British Humanist Association, an Expert Faculty Member at The School of Life, a Member of the Ethics Advisory Board at the Lifeboat Foundation, and a Member of the British Fulbright Scholars Assocation.

 Research interests:

DECISION MAKING: Dr Evans set up the Health Decision Making Research Group (HDMRG) in the School of Medicine at University College Cork to foster interdsciplinary collaborative research on decision making in health contexts. The HDMRG has recently launched an ambitious programme of research entitled Future Medical Decisions.

GAMBLING: Expert gamblers seem to be less prone to the cognitive biases that affect most of us. As a result, they can think about risk more clearly. Dr Evans is interviewing expert gamblers to learn more about the way they think about risk.

PREDICTION MARKETS: In 2008 Dr Evans teamed up with Intrade, the world's leading prediction market company, to investigate possible uses of these markets to forecast key indicators of public health in Ireland. This project was funded by an Innovation Partnerships Feasibility Study Award from Enterprise Ireland.
