Elective Information

All UCC Medical students must complete a four week clinical elective prior to Final Medicine registration. This allows the student to gain valuable "hands-on" experience in a clinical setting. An Elective Approval Form must be submitted to the School of Medicine providing details of the elective(s) that  the student is applying for. The Elective approval form will soon be available on-line. Electives must be approved prior to commencement by the Dean of the Medical School, (Medschool@ucc.ie)

At the end of each elective rotation an Elective Assessment Report must be completed by the Elective Supervisor and returned as soon as possible to the Medical School Office, UCC. If an Elective Assessment Report is not received the student is deemed to have failed the elective rotation.

It is possible to complete an elective outside of Ireland. For useful details on securing clinical electives in the US and Canada students can consult the Medical Students webpage.

Incoming student electives to UCC must be approved by the Dean of the Medical School (Medschool@ucc.ie). The following documentation needs to be forwarded to the Medical School in order for the request to be assessed:

  • Letter of Application
  • Original Academic Transcript
  • Reference from the Dean (or Associate/Vice-Dean) at your Medical School - including statement confirming that you will receive credit for your elective
  • Proof of Insurance Cover by your Medical School, both Health and Malpractice, that will be in place during your elective
  • Copy of any forms from your home Medical School which you will need certified by the UCC Medical School.
