Welcome from Professor George Shorten, Dean, School of Medicine
On behalf of University College Cork, and my colleagues at the School of Medicine, I would like to welcome you to our website. The School offers both a bachelor degree programme for school leavers and a graduate entry programme. We also offer you first class opportunities for postgraduate study and research. Our aim is to provide doctors of the future with a world class, student-centred education, based on current knowledge, informed by research and with an awareness of societal needs.
Since the foundation of the School in 1849, our graduates have consistently excelled in all clinical disciplines and in research. We are proud of this strong tradition and determined to continue to lead the way in medical education. We apply modern principles of medical education and training in all aspects of our program. We have recently completed a major curricular reform that emphasises greater integration throughout the curriculum; students are exposed to clinical material early and maintain contact with the “basic sciences” throughout their studies. It is our explicit intent that graduates of the UCC School of Medicine have the “tools” to develop as doctors throughout their careers.
The School has a highly successful research programme in particular in the areas of Cancer; Food and Health; Gerontology; Health Services, Health Policy and Population Health; Infectious Diseases; Mental Health and Pain; Neuroscience; and Vascular Health, Diabetes Stem Cell Biology.
We are delighted to afford you a warm welcome through this visit. As a community of learners, we invite you to return to learn more.
