VITA ACADEMICA

• 1979-1986 studies in German and comparative literature, philosophy, pedagogy, social sciences and art history in Würzburg, Vienna and Münster/Westfalen.

• 1984-1986 research assistant at the Chair of Prof. Dr. Dr. hc. Eckhard Heftrich, Germanistisches Institut, Westfälische-Wilhelms-Universität Münster. Collaborating in projects on Robert Musil, the Shakespeare reception in German literature and philosophy, Nietzsche.

• 1986-1991 research assistant and part time lecturer at the Institut für deutsche Philologie (Ältere Abteilung), Bayerische Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg: German literary mysticism of the Middle Ages (Prof. Dr. Horst Brunner). Doctoral studies and research: (anti-)classicism (Goethezeit), (post-)modernism, critical theory; phenomenology of art, ekphrasis; Hölderlin (Prof. Dr. Helmut Pfotenhauer).

• 1991-1994 Visiting Lecturer, 1994-1995 Assistant Professor at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Seoul, Korea (supported by the DAAD). Research on (anti-)classicism, idealism, inter-cultural and aesthetic communication. Teaching German language (undergraduate); history of German literature from the 18^th to the 20^th century: poetry, short prose; methodology of teaching foreign languages (post-graduate); German culture (Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation). Further activities: Ständiger Ausschuß Deutsch als Fremdsprache (German Embassy); permanent member of the selection committee for DAAD doctoral scholarships (German Embassy); Koreanische Gesellschaft für Germanistik: Advisory Board for the annual international ”Sorak Symposium”. Examiner at national and regional foreign language competitions for High School and University students organised by the Korean Higher Education Authority; external examiner at regular career assessment exams (German) of the Korean Intelligence Services. Co-presenter in foreign language programmes of the Korean Education Channel (EBS, radio and television).

• 1995-1999 Hochschulassistent (Assistant Professor) at the Seminar für deutsche Literatur und Sprache, Universität Hannover. Research and teaching: Anthropology and aesthetics of the tragic, performance theory, Goethezeit, Lessing. Academic managment: Executive Board of the Faculty of Linguistic and Literary Studies; Advisory Board for the bi-annual theatre festival and symposium SCENA (Media Centre of the Protestant Church of Lower Saxonia).

• Since 1999 Lectureship in German at UCC. Co-ordinator for the BCL Law&German programme (German Studies section). Member of the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Law. Teaching: German literature, political culture of Germany, critical theory and aesthetics. Research: Anthropology and aesthetics of theatre and performance art, literary theory, media and art.

RESEARCH PROJECTS

Metaphysik des Leibes. Anthropologie und Ästhetik des Tragischen von Lessing bis Nietzsche:

The objective of this monograph is: to develop a (metaphysical and/or aesthetical) theory of the subject of ritual and theatrical performance, focusing on the performing, mask wearing and role playing ”Leib” (body). This body is investigated as specific non-identical entity and highlighted as critical alternative to traditional metaphysical (also psycho-analytical) concepts of ”mind” or ”psyche”. The genuine purpose of this ”subject” is, what e. g. Nietzsche called ”tragische Erkenntnis”: a spontaneous motion of human self-awareness, related to an anticipated experience of mortality.

Schweigende Tropen. Studien zu einer Ästhetik der Ohnmacht:

In kritischer Auseinandersetzung mit aktuellen Thesen zum Verschwinden des Subjekts im philosophischen Diskurs verfolgt das Projekt in literarischen Fallstudien von Sophokles bis Rilke die Konzeption einer Ästhetik der Ohnmacht als Ästhetik der erratischen Selbstbehauptung eines humanen Subjekts unter den Bedingungen seiner kulturellen Anfechtung. Dabei wird die Problematik des Verhältnisses von traumatischer Erfahrung und ästhetischer Initiative durch den Rekurs auf die elementaren Figuren der conditio humana allen Bewußtseins aufgelöst. Die These vom Verschwundensein des Subjekts erweist sich insofern als unrichtig. Als Subjekt der Ohnmacht entzieht es sich dem Zugriff der Macht, aber es behauptet sich durch eine ästhetische Reflexion auf die Wirklichkeit jenes Todes, dem zuletzt auch die Macht und die Erkenntnis unterliegen. Es konfiguriert sich ästhetisch nicht als Subjekt des Wissens, sondern als Subjekt des Überlebens.

Eine erste Monographie erscheint im Oktober 2003.

Liebeslyrik. Moderne und Postmoderne:

Untersuchung zur Poetologie des modernen Liebesgedichts, z. B. im Hinblick auf die perspektivische Inszenierung und Aufhebung des erotischen Dialoges im "lyrischen Wir".

EDITORSHIP

Gert Hofmann is founder and editor of Edition Kairos. Kulturwissenschaft und Ästhetik, an academic book series published in co-operation with the Francke Verlag, Tübingen und Basel. Co-editors are Reinhold Görling, Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf and Gisela Dischner, Universität Hannover.

Edition Kairos is meant to be a forum for the publication of monographs and conference proceedings, which are investigating in a trans-disciplinary approach the interplay of aesthetic communication and cultural practice.

The series is committed to the development of Cultural Science particularly with regard to the aesthetic dynamics of cultural topographies, and with regard to certain artistic and symbolic acts, which can be seen as initiating and altering cultural entities. Such a commitment leads us beyond the archives of a rather static cultural memory. Its research interest is centred around the blurred identity of cultural practice, concentrating on its ambiguous strategies stretching between archive and vision, confinement and transgression. In this context searching into the human condition of the subject of cultural transformation has proved to be increasingly important. Cultural Studies have to dwell on the interfusion of critique and crisis rendering this subject evasive, fictitious and transgressive. Subsequently also the development of alternative cultural terminologies shall be imminent, considering not only intellectual, but also corporeal aspects of cultural processes, enabling us to adequately assess and elaborate on the contingency character of cultural phenomena.
