Short Biography
Mr Mick Monk MPhil obtained his primary degree in 1971 in the University of Sheffield. After some years in field archaeology he did an MPhil at Southampton University, later working as an archaeobotanist at University College Cardiff. He joined the lecturing staff of University College Cork in 1978. His research interests include the beginnings and development of agriculture, particularly in Britain and Ireland. He is also actively working in Early Medieval settlement studies. He has worked in the area of archaeobotanical and hinterland studies of Early Medieval and Medieval urban settlements and is also interested in site formation histories, environmental archaeology and excavation recording techniques. He has also published and lectured on archaeological resource management.
Current Research
He has carried out both fieldwork and archaeobotanical studies in Britain, France and Greece and most recently in the Lebanon and Russia as well as in Ireland. Current research projects include the completion of a book on early agriculture in Ireland. He is also working on the analysis of excavations of two ringfort settlements at Lisleagh, Co. Cork. He is collaborating on a range of archaeobotanical studies, involving material from various excavations in Ireland, as well as his involvement in the Novgorod project in Russia and the Souk project in Beirut.
