Archaeological Ceramics Research Group
Director: Ms Rose Cleary
The Department of Archaeology has a strong research record in artifact studies, including the analysis of early Irish pottery. This research group supports a range of projects dealing with pottery from the prehistoric and historic periods in Ireland. This includes projects initiated by the academic staff, by postgraduate students, as well as projects carried out in partnership with external bodies and individual researchers. The research undertaken includes conventional ceramic recording and analysis, scientific studies and broader contextual and theoretical research. The group promotes early ceramic research through the holding of conferences and seminars, as well as publication and exhibition initiatives. It also has links to other departments in the University, notably geology and history.
The development of this unit builds on the availability of two leading pottery specialists in Irish archaeology, namely Rose Cleary and Clare McCutcheon.
