Professor O’Brien carried out the excavation of a prehistoric ringbarrow this summer, with the assistance of Dr Michelle Comber, Mr Nick Hogan and postgraduate students in the Department of Archaeology The site is located at Knockatreenane near Aherla Co. Cork. The excavation uncovered dating samples and important details on the construction and abandonment of this site, as well as a central cremation connected to its use as a burial monument. The excavation was undertaken with the support of the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government. The project is part of a broader investigation of the later prehistory of the mid-Cork region, which includes a landscape study of the recently excavated hillfort at Clashanimud.
