Welcome Address from Head of College of Business and Law

The College of Business and Law incorporates the Faculties of Commerce and Law and is one of four Colleges now in place as part of a revised management structure for the University. Through the programmes run under the auspices of the Commerce and Law Faculties the College of Business and Law continues to attract the highest aggregate number of talented students in UCC. Accordingly, students experience a vibrant university and college life, where the emphasis is on research led teaching and the provision of programmes and courses which prepare students for a globalised, sophisticated business and legal environment.

Our focus will be on preparing our students for their chosen fields through a range of university based and distance-learning honours degree programmes where they will:

• find a relevant, challenging and stimulating educational environment which is aimed at preparing our graduates to participate fully and to the best of their abilities in the careers which they choose;

• meet students from a diverse range of national and international backgrounds who are similarly talented and as eager to learn and participate as they are;

• acquire valuable “transferable skills” demanded by modern employers;

• be prepared to think strategically and critically about future trends in law and business both nationally and internationally;

A key element of our campus-based degree courses in both Business and Law is the support the College provides for paid or voluntary placement at home and/or abroad as an integral part of the learning process. Where programmes provide placement as part of the degree programme this provides an invaluable learning opportunity.

The College wishes to ensure that students are provided with every opportunity to stretch themselves both intellectually and in other ways, through participation in student societies which are supported by the College, many of which have a discipline based focus, and through sports and cultural activities, which are in turn complimented by the University’s beautifully situated campus, where both sports grounds and the city’s cultural life are within easy reach.

In addition to benefitting from the excellent academic and intellectual wealth of the College of Business and Law at University College Cork the student’s academic activities are supported with skills-based education for instance in, legal writing, analysis, presentation skills and teamwork skills.

As Head of the College and on behalf of a very motivated and interested staff we will welcome you to UCC and pledge our support in helping you be successful.
