Faculty of Law Essay Competition - Awards Ceremony January 2012
The Faculty of Law at UCC held its annual Law Essay Awards Ceremony on Thursday, 19th January 2012, in the Council Room, North Wing to present the winners with their €200 cheques. Representatives from all participating schools as well as lecturers from UCC’s Department of Law were invited to attend. A welcome address was given by the Dean, Professor Steve Hedley, and a panel of experts in the various fields spoke on the different topics and outlined why each individual essay was seen to have stood out from its competitors. Competition was stiff and an unprecedented number of entries were received from all over the country.
All senior cycle students were invited to submit an essay of approximately 1,000 words on one of a number of topics considered pertinent to modern day life in Ireland. The purpose of the competition is to encourage students to consider the relevance and impact of law on their lives and society generally. Entries are welcome in both English and Irish.

UCC WINS IRISH FINAL OF CIMA GLOBAL BUSINESS CHALLENGE
UCC has won the Irish final of the CIMA Global Business Challenge (GBC) for the second year running and now go on to represent Ireland at the global finals in Chengdu, China next month. The UCC team of David White, Gary O’Mahony (both Accounting IV), Robert Sweeney (Finance III) and Hazel Grimes (Accounting II) will compete against seventeen other international teams for the title of Global Champions. Dr Margaret Healy, Department of Accounting, Finance & Information Systems, is the students’ academic mentor. The team beat off stiff competition from teams from eleven other colleges and business schools around Ireland to emerge winners.
The CIMA GBC 2011, which is being held in partnership with Barclays and local sponsors BPP, is an international business management competition designed to bring out the best in potential business leaders among young people. The competition is designed to test the business management skills of participants. Teams were initially provided with a case study describing CeeCee, a fictional fashion retailer. Teams are required to analyse this in advance and conduct research into the general business context in which the case is set. On the day of the competition teams respond to a number of previously unseen events. Within a three-hour timeframe, they are expected to assimilate the additional information, prepare and deliver a 20 minute presentation of their analysis and recommendations and participate in a question and answer session with the adjudicating panel.
The UCC team represent Ireland at the global finals in Chengdu, China, July 23rd/24th where they will compete against 17 winning teams including Australia, China, Malaysia, Russia, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Africa and the UK.
Alumni Achievement Award College of Business and Law 2011
Prof. Irene Lynch Fannon, Head of College of Business and Law delivered the citation to The Honourable Mr Justice Liam McKechnie at the recent Alumni Achievement Awards held in University College, Cork. Mr. Justice McKechnie a most distinguished graduate of the Faculty of Law, graduated with a Law degree in 1971 and went on to study and train as a barrister at the Kings Inns in Dublin.He was called to the Bar in 1972 and admitted to the Inner Bar as Senior Counsel in 1987. He was appointed as a Judge of the High Court in 2000. During his time as a High Court judge he made a very significant contribution to the development of Irish law because of his involvementin the important area of competition law, which in turn is heavily influenced by developments at European level. In June of 2010 his work as a practising lawyer and as a member of the judiciary was recognised through his elevation to the Supreme Court. The Law Faculty and the College of Business and Law are honoured to recognise him as the first graduate of UCC to be so appointed under the 1937 Constitution.Professor Lynch Fannon was delighted to deliver the award citation to such an eminent recipient.
CFA Institute's Global Investment Research Challenge
A UCC team from Accounting & Finance won the Irish round of the CFA institute’s Global Investment Research Challenge (GIRC) held at Davys Stockbrokers on 3rd February 2011.
The team comprises of final year students from the BSc Finance and BSc Accounting: Dorota Donigiewicz; Don Duggan; Frank Kenny; Richard Murphy; Richard O'Donovan. The team’s professional mentor is Ken Power of Killeevan Investment Consultants and Dr. Ray Donnelly is the academic mentor. The team’s financial analysis of Paddy Power plc enabled them defeat teams from NUI, Galway, Trinity College, UCD and DCU in the Irish final.
The Global Investment Research Challenge is a real world investment competition. About 2,500 students representing over 500 of the top university business and finance programs worldwide, are participating in the GIRC. The universities assemble teams of three to five business and finance students who work directly with a company in researching and preparing a company analysis. The teams' final presentations are locally evaluated by high-profile panels of heads of research, portfolio managers, and chief investment officers from the world’s top firms. The local champions advance to regional competitions in the Americas, Asia, and Europe and then to the global finale.
This is the second time in the past three years that UCC has won the Irish leg of this competition. The team will now compete in the Europe, Middle East and Africa final in Madrid on 3rd March where they will be hoping to emulate the UCC team that was successful in the European leg of the competition in 2009.
College of Business and Law Scholarship Awards October 2010
The College of Business and Law awarded scholarships to top achieving students at today’s College Assembly meeting. Certificates and scholarship cheques were presented by Professor Neil Collins, Dean of Commerce on behalf of the Registrar and Vice President Academic. Professor Irene Lynch Fannon, Head of College was delighted to honour such high achieving students in the College and wished them well in their future endeavours.

Certificate and scholarship cheques were presented by Professor Paul Giller, Registrar and Vice President Academic. Professor Irene Lynch Fannon, Head of College was delighted to honour such high achieving students in the College and wished them well in their future endeavours.
