MA in Aesthetics and History of Art
The new MA in Aesthetics and History of Art is an innovative course that appropriately responds to sustained developments in aesthetics and presents historical and contemporary research relevant to the subject areas of philosophy and art history as well as to cognate and related disciplines and practices.

The aim of this MA programme is to offer at UCC the only course in Ireland that provides students with the opportunity to develop and critically evaluate theories of art in their historical as well as philosophical contexts.

The Learning Objectives of this MA programme are:-

Examination of fundamental concepts, methods and vocabulary of philosophical and aesthetic discourse and of art historical research and writing.

Investigation of the specific ways in which art contributes to human self-awareness and to history and culture.

Establishing the appropriate theoretical and historical background for reflecting on the nature of art practice and its contexts. 

The EU tuition fee for this MA programme 2009/2010 (1 year full-time) is expected to be €4,855.00.   The academic year is due to commence the week beginning 21st September 2009.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: 

1) Applicants must APPLY ONLINE at www.pac.ie/ucc (Course Code CKE71) completing the taught postgraduate studies application form.

2) COMPLETING AND POSTING a special Supplementary Candidates Statement form to the Postgraduate Applications Centre, 1 Courthouse Square, Galway (which includes a 500 word Statement of purpose).

3) Non-UCC applicants must submit evidence of any qualification(s) (academic results and certificates/parchments) that were not completed in University College Cork and evidence of English language proficiency (if applicable) to the Online Postgraduate Applications Centre, 1, Courthouse Square, Galway (marked with your online Postgraduate Application Number)

Course Content

Candidates pursue a full-time taught programme for one year from the date of first registration for the programme.

*Selection of modules for 2009/2010 are subject to approval by the University Academic Board in March 2009 and may be subject to change

Students register for one 15 credit M.A. module in philosophy (teaching period 1) AND for one 15 credit M.A. module in art history (teaching period 1 and 2) (=30 credits).

The philosophy module is examined by assessment at the conclusion of teaching period 1.

The art history module is examined by assessment at the conclusion of teaching period 2.

Candidates prepare a Literature Review in Philosophy OR in Art History under the supervision of a member of staff, for submission on or before March 30 (20 credits).

A minor dissertation (max. 20,000 words) in Philosophy OR in Art History is submitted for examination at the Winter Examination Board (40 credits)

PH6003 Perception, Experience, Consciousness (15 credits)

and

2. HA6012 Theory for Modern and Contemporary Art (15 credits)

and

3. PH6007 Literature Review (20 credits)

or

HA6005 Literature Review (20 credits)

and

4. PH6008 Minor Dissertation (40 credits)

or

HA6004 Minor Dissertation (40 credits)

Entry Requirements

In order to be admitted to the MA programme in Aesthetics and History of Art a candidate should have a second class honours, Grade I, Primary Degree (or equivalent) in Art-History, Philosophy or relevant subject (including fine-art and architecture) , or equivalent qualifications . Successful applicants must demonstrate evidence of having taken undergraduate or post-graduate modules in art history and/or philosophy and/or practical/professional expertise or qualification in an area that involves aesthetics.

Applications are subject to the satisfactory and appropriate completion of an online application form at www.pac.ie/ucc and the completion of a special Supplementary Candidate's Statement Form and subsequent approval.

The entry requirements for 2009/2010 are subject to approval by the University Academic Board in March 2009
